About MCC

The Mount Carmel Baptist Church began as a Sunday school in the living room of Rev. N. Kimbrough. In 1890 the Sunday school was expanded into Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Rev. Kimbrough served as pastor until 1896 and was called to pastor another church.  Rev. J F Broyles was elected pastor during the church’s fifth anniversary. The church grew physically and spiritually until a larger edifice was acquired in 1913.

In December 1918 Rev. William Winfrey accepted the pastoral call, after Rev. Broyles became terminally ill. Due to the increased growth of the church, Rev. Winfrey resigned.  The newly ordained Rev. Charles Walton accepted the leadership of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 1928.

Rev. Charles Walton died in 1945, and Rev. A.D. Banks accepted the leadership role and served as pastor until 1953.  Rev. James Glover became pastor and served until 1962.

Rev. T.T. Newman was called to the church in 1963, and under his pastorage Mt. Carmel grew to new heights.  Under the leadership of Rev. T.T. Newman, Mt. Carmel grew and moved from 2833 E. 25th Street to a newly built structure at 5502 E. 36th Street.  Rev. T.T. Newman was called to his heavenly home in January 1987.

Since the divine appointment of Pastor Theron D. Williams in 1987, the Lord has added many souls to the body of Christian believers at Mt. Carmel Church.  Pastor Williams through his anointed preaching and teaching ability has been a source of strength, inspiration, and encouragement to a great number of new ministers preaching the word of God.

A new sanctuary was built after the burning of the mortgage at 5502 E. 36th Street.  A radio and television ministries were established, and the congregation grew to proportions that necessitated three services—two on Sunday and one on Wednesday night.  Continuing to grow a new sanctuary was built at 4352 MItthoeffer attached to a school to provide Christian education to children.

The Mt. Carmel Church continues to grow spiritually, in Purpose, Power, Passion and in number, under the leadership of Dr. Theron D. Williams.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Theron D. Williams has been the Pastor of the Mt. Carmel Church.  Dr. Williams has led this multimillion-dollar ministry to complete three major building projects and extensive facility renovation campaigns.  Mt. Carmel is now located at 9610 E 42nd St.   Mt. Carmel Church is located on the Far Eastside of Indianapolis, in a disadvantaged section of the city. This area of Indianapolis is beset with several serious issues to which the Mt. Carmel Community Development Corporation is currently responding by designing four community-enhancing initiatives. The four initiatives are as follows; a community farm and farmers’ market to provide fresh produce to the community; also, a grocery store to eliminate the food desert; a federal credit union to combat predatory lending by payday-loan business and an all-boys charter high school, to educate and empower young men.
